The Seven Deadly Sins and The Seven Cardinal Virtues
[January - May, 2004]

9:00-9:50am
Scott Matz and Peter Klein, Discussion Leaders
Benton/Bingham Room

People spend a lot of money going to the gym and exercising their bodies. They spend a lot of time in front of the mirror grooming their face. And this is not all bad. After all, our bodies go everywhere we go so they might as well be fit and fancy. But, with Jesus, we believe that life is more than the body. Our lives need groomed in godliness. Our thinking needs a workout so we can run the race set before us. During the spring semester, the college class will seek to understand the seven deadly sins and the seven cardinal virtues in the light of the Holy Scriptures. We will set out on our own voyage of discovery, aiming to learn more about sin and salvation, spiritual sickness and health. We’ll address such things: why is my heart such an enigma? Why are our desires so disordered? Why is sin so tempting when it is so unbelievably insane? What good work is God doing in my life to change me? How do I go about adding moral excellence to my life (2 Peter 1:5)? We hope you will join us for this study.

Our study guide is James Stalker's short book The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Cardinal Virtues. Here's a brief description of Stalker's book:

"It has long been believed that there are seven sins from which all others grow. These seven deadly sins serve as warnings to those traveling the path of the Christian life-for it is these sins and those that stem from them that most often lead us astray.

"These sins are balanced by seven virtues. Cultivating these cardinal virtues builds Christian character and leads to a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.

"Originally published as two separate volumes in 1901 and 1902 by the American Tract Society, The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Cardinal Virtues gives believers a guide for facing good and evil in their Christian journey."
