TELLING IT SLANT: THE PARABLES OF JESUS
Emily Dickinson reminds us: “Tell all the Truth but tell it slant -- Success
in Circuit lies.”
In our adult Sunday School class we will spend the better part of this year
listening again to the stories that Jesus told. We’ll journey leisurely through
the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life in hope of hearing “good news”. Along the way,
we’ll consider why stories are essential to living well, what it means to live in
a sacramental universe, and how the Gospel can “dazzle gradually.”
“A vigorous religion will deal more with the home than with the church and
more with the workbench than with the altar. The postman, binding together
separated people, may be a kind of priest. Jesus taught His disciples how to pray,
but He also taught them how to become better fishermen. Christ’s use of parables
is one application of belief in a sacramental universe. The deepest truths about
the human spirit could be expressed by reference to seeds and soils and birds and
stones and lambs.”
